Hans Nilesen was born in 1941, Former is his nickname. He had worked for pipe production Master Poul Rasmussen since 15 years old, and became a professional pipe maker of the Larsen’s when he was 21 years old. He worked in this company for 10 years, and became one of the 19 pipe craftsmen, include Teddy knudsen and Tonni Nielsen,who had later become world famous masters of making pipes.He had high responsibility of checking the quality of each pipe,training new,making pipes and approaching perfection.
He held a pipe workshop at his home so that he could design new pipe style. Pipe maker Emil Chonowitsch and Jess Chonowitch were so busy for the order from Japan at that time that their product couldn’t meet the requirements. So they turned to Hans Nilesen and asked him whether he would make some high quality Denmark pipes. Former accepted and He agreed to complete 15 per month to meet the Japanese need. With the continuous growing of Japanese order, Former left Larsen finally and started making pipes at his own company.
Hans Nielsen engaged in pipe carving for 40 years at Denmark, which is the birthplace of the modern pipe production. His pipes are named Former. But actually, in Denmark, “Former” means nothing unless mentioned the name Hans Nilesen.
40 years of experience has been perfectly reflected on Hans Nielsen’s pipes. Innovative design, Extraordinary details all come from his rich experience. He is always proud of his work. “Each pipe is my effort.” he said. There’s no doubt that his experience and wisdom, “These pipes are as wonderfull as anything in the world.”
All the Former’s pipes are identified with “FORMER” and “MADE IN DENMARK”, and also marked the “HANDMAKE” and “FREEHAND”. (HANDMAKE is a typical pipe, prototype is completed by machine, however FREEHAND is totally the handmade product.)
